Universities

Three Universities. Three Environmental Perspectives.

BIOVERTE is delivered by a consortium of three European universities, each contributing unique scientific expertise, research infrastructure, ecosystems, and learning environments.

Together, they offer students an exceptional opportunity to explore biodiversity and environmental challenges across the Baltic, Mediterranean, and Central European regions while gaining a truly international academic experience.

Vytautas Magnus University

Kaunas, Lithuania

Understanding Biodiversity in Baltic Ecosystems

Vytautas Magnus University (VMU) hosts the first semester of BIOVERTE and provides the scientific foundations of the programme.

Located in the heart of Lithuania, VMU is recognized for its expertise in ecology, biodiversity research, climate change, and environmental management. Students are introduced to the ecological processes that shape biodiversity and ecosystem functioning while exploring some of Northern Europe’s most important natural landscapes.

Areas of Expertise

  • Biodiversity and conservation biology
  • Ecosystem ecology
  • Climate change impacts
  • Freshwater and wetland ecosystems
  • Sustainable land use
  • Environmental policy and management
  • GIS and ecological monitoring

Environmental Context

Lithuania offers access to:

Forest ecosystems

Lakes and freshwater habitats

Wetlands and river valleys

Agricultural landscapes

Protected natural areas

What Students Experience

  • Fieldwork in diverse Baltic ecosystems
  • Foundations of biodiversity science
  • Environmental monitoring methods
  • Introduction to European environmental challenges

University of Trieste

Trieste, Italy

Exploring Mediterranean Ecosystems and Environmental Governance

The University of Trieste hosts the second semester and the BIOVERTE Summer School.

Situated on the Adriatic coast, Trieste is an ideal location for studying marine biodiversity, coastal resilience, environmental governance, and sustainability transitions. The university is part of a vibrant international research environment and offers direct access to some of Europe’s most valuable coastal and marine ecosystems.

Areas of Expertise

  • Environmental modelling and decision-making
  • Collaboration with conservation and management stakeholders

University of Silesia in Katowice

Katowice, Poland

Learning from Ecological Transformation and Restoration

The University of Silesia hosts the third semester and coordinates the BIOVERTE programme.

Located in one of Europe’s most dynamic regions of environmental transformation, the university offers students a unique opportunity to study biodiversity, resilience, and restoration in post-industrial landscapes.

Upper Silesia has become an internationally recognised living laboratory where nature and society interact in changing environments, creating valuable opportunities for research and innovation.

Areas of Expertise

  • Restoration ecology
  • Biomonitoring
  • Environmental chemistry
  • Microbial ecology
  • Novel ecosystems
  • Bioremediation
  • Nature-based solutions

Environmental Context

Students investigate:

What Students Experience

  • Applied ecological research
  • Restoration planning
  • Biomonitoring techniques
  • Fieldwork in novel ecosystems
  • Case studies of environmental transformation

A Complementary Partnership

Each university contributes a different scientific perspective and environmental context.

VMU | Lithuania

Understanding Ecosystems

Building strong foundations in biodiversity science, ecology, and environmental management.

UniTS | Italy

Managing Environmental Change

Applying analytical tools, governance frameworks, and interdisciplinary approaches to environmental challenges.

USil | Poland

Building Ecosystem Resilience

Developing solutions for restoration, adaptation, and sustainable management in changing landscapes.

Together, these perspectives create a unique learning pathway that cannot be replicated by a single institution.

One Programme, One Community

Although students move between countries, BIOVERTE is designed as a fully integrated programme.

Students benefit from:

  • Joint teaching and supervision
  • Shared field courses and Summer School
  • International research opportunities
  • Access to diverse ecosystems and laboratories
  • Collaboration with environmental stakeholders
  • A Europe-wide professional network

Three Universities. One European Vision.

BIOVERTE brings together the strengths of Lithuania, Italy, and Poland to educate future leaders in biodiversity conservation, ecosystem restoration, and environmental resilience.

Study across Europe. Learn from diverse ecosystems. Build solutions for a sustainable future.
