Why BIOVERTE?
Biodiversity loss, climate change and environmental degradation are transforming ecosystems and societies across Europe and around the world. Addressing these challenges requires professionals who can combine scientific knowledge with practical skills, interdisciplinary thinking and the ability to work with communities, policymakers and other stakeholders.
The BIOVERTE Joint Master Programme – Applied Biodiversity Management and Resilient Ecosystem Transitions has been created to prepare the next generation of environmental professionals to meet these challenges. The programme is jointly delivered by the University of Silesia in Katowice (Poland), the University of Trieste (Italy), and Vytautas Magnus University (Lithuania).
BIOVERTE combines ecology, biodiversity science, environmental management, data analysis, socio-economic perspectives and environmental governance. Students will learn not only how to understand environmental change, but also how to develop and implement solutions in real-world settings.
The programme draws on the distinct environmental contexts and expertise of three European regions. Students will explore biodiversity conservation and ecosystem restoration in the Baltic region, post-industrial and urban ecosystems in Central Europe, and marine and coastal challenges in the Mediterranean. This geographical diversity provides a unique opportunity to understand environmental problems from different perspectives and to learn how solutions can be adapted to different social and ecological contexts.
BIOVERTE has been developed in close cooperation with research institutions, public authorities, protected areas, NGOs and environmental consultancies. Their input identified key competencies needed by future environmental professionals, including biodiversity monitoring and modelling, GIS and remote sensing, socio-economic assessment, environmental law and governance, stakeholder communication, and interdisciplinary project management.
What will BIOVERTE prepare you for?
BIOVERTE will equip you to:
- understand and assess complex environmental and biodiversity challenges;
- use modern tools for biodiversity monitoring, modelling and environmental assessment;
- design and evaluate ecosystem restoration and nature-based solutions;
- connect scientific evidence with environmental policy and management;
- work effectively across scientific disciplines and with diverse stakeholders;
- develop practical solutions for resilient ecosystems and sustainable transitions.
BIOVERTE is designed for students who want to move beyond understanding environmental problems and become capable of actively shaping solutions for a more resilient and sustainable future.
